Professional selection in civil aviation was discussed in the IAC

The 2nd Round table meeting on the topic "Professional Selection in Civil Aviation and its Methods" organized jointly with Federal State Unitary Enterprise "State Research Institute of Civil Aviation" (GosNII GA) was held at the Interstate Aviation Committee. The event was attended by over 50 specialists representing Russian aviation authorities, leading aviation companies, airports, scientific, educational, and medical institutions (medical and flight expert commissions).

Opening the Round table, Deputy Chairman of the IAC Sergey Zaiko wished the participants fruitful work and noted that issues related to the "human factor," including professional selection, require detailed consideration by all stakeholders of aviation market.

In his speech, Professor Vasily Shapkin, Scientific Director of the State Research Institute of Civil Aviation and Doctor of Engineering Sciences, outlined the Institute's main areas of activity. He also emphasized the need to revive the psychological (medical) department at the State Research Institute of Civil Aviation, focusing on ways to develop innovative technologies in the field of "human factor".

The Round table meeting highlighted the discussion of regulatory documents for conducting professional selection in employment, including psychophysiological assessments of pilots and air traffic controllers. The documents being developed must be based on the requirements of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation and the Air Code of the Russian Federation, including the amendments made in 2024, which require employers to assess the professionally important psychophysiological qualities of pilots and air traffic controllers.

The participants also reviewed scientific requirements for methods, analysis algorithms, and standards for evaluating results used in the professional psychological selection of aviation specialists.

The reports of the participants indicated that the proposed selection system affects the labor rights of aviation specialists, and therefore the organization and implementation of psychological testing, the standardization of results, and the selection of methods should be handled with the utmost care and professionalism.

During the discussion, opinions were exchanged on proposed test batteries for use in the professional selection of civil aviation flight and air traffic control personnel. The speakers presented the composition and initial results of the new "AVIATION" test battery, designed for the professional selection of pilots.

Following the Round table discussion, participants expressed their opinion on the feasibility of developing a Methodological Guide for conducting professional psychological selection of aviation specialists and pilot testing of the proposed battery of tests. Furthermore, the participants agreed on the need to continue joint work on professional psychological selection.
